New Asian American-owned bookstore opens in Seattle’s Chinatown

Mam’s Books, a new bookstore, opened its doors in Seattle this past Saturday.

According to KING 5 News, the new bookstore is the first independently-owned Asian American (and specifically Cambodian American) bookstore in Seattle and the broader Pacific Northwest.

The bookstore, owned by Cambodian American Sokha Danh, is located in Seattle’s Chinatown International District— a neighborhood with a rich Asian American history.

Mam’s Books is named after Danh’s father and is dedicated to both of his parents who were Cambodian refugees, according to the bookstore’s website.

The bookstore features dozens of Asian American authors and artists, and the website includes a Google form where individuals can offer input into what authors and books should be included.

He told KING 5 News that hopes this bookstore will be seen as a “‘living room’ for the community he loves” and will help “write a new story for Asian American children.

“My hope is that this Asian American bookstore will be a liberating space for us to pass down our stories to the next generation,” Danh wrote in his blog back in December 2022.

Now, nearly ten months later, Mam’s Books has opened to the public, and it is surely a place where all Asian Americans can feel heard.
