Diwali celebrations are underway throughout the U.S.

Millions of people throughout the United States will celebrate Diwali today. Sunday, November 12, marks the first day of the five-day festival.

Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Many often refer to the holiday as the festival of lights.

The holiday is often associated with Hinduism, but other faiths (such as Sikhism, Jainism and Buddhism) also celebrate Diwali, CNN reports. People celebrate by decorating their homes, setting off firecrackers and cooking delicious food.

Several events will be held in honor of Diwali in New York City, Gothamist reports. The Seaport on Manhattan’s East River will host free dance performances and a floating candle ceremony. Restaurants will also hold dinners for Diwali. According to PIX 11, New York City landmarks like the World Trade Center will be lit up in red, yellow, pink and blue.

The city of Freemont, California, will host a Gurdwara Diwali event today as well, Hoodline reports. The celebrations will continue throughout the upcoming week.
