A new report found that big U.S. cities saw record levels of hate crimes in 2023.
According to USA Today, an annual report from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University found that the total number of hate crimes across ten major cities increased by 11% from 2022 to 2023.
The report collected hate crime data from Houston, San Diego, Chicago, Los Angeles, Austin, Dallas, Phoenix, New York, San Antonio and Philadelphia. Preliminary data found that there were 2,173 hate crimes reported to police in those 10 cities during 2023.
According to Axios, the increase also applied to major cities outside the initial 10 the report focused on, like San Francisco, Washington, Denver, Seattle, Boston and Salt Lake City. Across 25 cities, hate crimes increased by 15%.
The report highlighted an increase in anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim hate crimes in the fall of 2023.
