The city of Montreal has officially recognized its Chinatown as a heritage site.
According to Montreal City News, Chinatown is also the first sector to be designated as a heritage site. The designation is meant to honor Chinatown’s history and the contribution of Asian Canadians.
Projet Montréal announced the heritage site in a tweet.
This designation honors the rich past of Chinatown, the first neighborhood to welcome diverse communities and Chinese immigration to Canada and Montreal,” Projet Montréal said in a statement translated by Cult MTL.
“The only preserved historic Chinatown in Quebec, it is also the only French-speaking Chinatown in America. This measure marks a historic gesture and is part of a global strategy to recognize and promote the history of the district.”
