Nymphia Wind has become the first Taiwanese American queen to win “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nymphia Wind was named the Season 16 winner on Friday night, beating out the two other finalists Plane Jane and Sapphira Cristál.
Wind was known for her incredible designs and love of the color yellow, The Hollywood Reporter noted. During the finale, she performed her lip sync to Kylie Minogue’s “Padam Padam.”
Being the first Taiwanese American winner means a lot to Nymphia Wind.
“It’s very important for me to represent my country,” she told Good Morning America the day after her win. “Because I love Taiwan, and to be able to showcase that on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ means so much to me.”
Wind, also known as Leo Tsao, was born in Los Angeles but spent many years in Tapei, Taiwan and Hong Kong, NBC News reports. She moved to Brooklyn, New York in 2022 to pursue other opportunities in drag.
Earlier in the week, Wind sat down with long-time Drag Race judge Michelle Visage and discussed the importance of representing the Asian American community.
“All I said to myself was, I’m here to break the Asian curse,” the 28-year-old said. “I am not going to be out early on.”
“So I just wanted to come here and show a rich, rich Asian culture in my drag,” she added.
