Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson falsely branded Kamala Harris as ‘Samoan-Malaysian’ in a bizarre rant at Donald Trump’s rally in Madison Square Garden.
During his speech, Carlson criticized a potential Harris victory on Nov. 5, and seemingly convinced the audience to question the results.
“No fair system would elevate someone like Kamala Harris to a presidential nomination”, said Carlson, as reported on by The Daily Beast. “She’s never been accused of doing anything useful. She has precisely no achievements. She’s a nominee without getting a single vote.”.
“It’s going to be pretty hard to look at us and say ‘You know what? Kamala Harris, she got 85 million votes because she’s so impressive as the first Samoan-Malaysian, low-I.Q., former California prosecutor ever to be elected president. It was just a groundswell of popular support, and anyone who thinks otherwise is just a freak or a criminal”, he continued.
“No, she’s not impressive, It’s going to be very hard for me to believe the rest of us are going to say, ‘You know what, Joe Scarborough, you’re right. She won fair and square because she’s just so impressive!”.
Kamala Harris is neither Samoan nor Malaysian. As mentioned by The Independent, she was born in California to Donald Harris and Shyamala Gopalan, who immigrated to the United States from Jamaica and India respectively. Kamala has been open her upbringing and appreciation of both cultures.
Malaysia’s Foreign Minister, Mohamad Hasan, took to Facebook on Wednesday to poke fun at Carlson’s comment, as mentioned by The Star.
“Tucker Carlson recently claimed that US presidential candidate Kamala Harris is Malaysian. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, Mr. Carlson.”, said Hasan. “We were not aware that a Malaysian was running for the office of US President. Should Puan Kamala win the race, we are delighted to invite her to #balikkampung and try some #nasigorengUSA.”
Malaysian comedian and actor, Ronny Chieng, also took jabs at Carlson, as mentioned by Malay Mail. “Big mistake buddy. I’m Malaysian and The Rock is Samoan”, said Chieng in a video uploaded onto The Daily Show‘s social media accounts on Tuesday. “That’s right. Now, you’re insulting two of the biggest movie stars on the planet,”
As mentioned by The Star, Trump has previously made false claims about Harris’s ethnic identity, saying that she “has not identified as both Black and Indian” in an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists conference.
