Astro Bot wins Game of the Year at 2024 Game Awards

Team Asobi’s Astro Bot has won the Game of the Year award at the 11th Game Awards on Thursday. In addition to Game of the Year, Astro Bot also took home the awards for Best Action Adventure, Best Director, and Best Family Game.

Swen Vincke, the director for Baldur’s Gate 3 and the previous Game of the Year recipient, presented this year’s award, saying that it “changed his life.”, IGN reported. “Should you be told to wrap it up, you can always come back and chat for three minutes.”

When accepting the award, Team Asobi Studio Head Nicolas Doucet thanked Nintendo and Super Mario Bros. for inspiring his passion for video games and his entire team, as mentioned by Nintendo Life.

“Last and not least…and I didn’t plan to say it, but I’m going to say it anyway, you know platformers, you know PlayStation 30 years, and we made a platformer which is great – it’s very nostalgic and fresh at the same time but let’s not forget that even before PlayStation there were people making platformers”, said Doucet. “I remember I was a kid in 1989 Christmas, and I got a grey box, there was a game packed in, it was called Super Mario Bros. And it was really, really great

“So we are in Japan, we are in Tokyo, they are in Kyoto, but I want to pay tribute to the company who really put like platformers and showed us innovation and quality consistently, and inspired us to actually make the game that we made…And I’ve managed not mention them, have you noticed? But you all know who they are”.

Astro Bot was the most nominated entry of this years Game Awards, with seven nominations, sharing that title with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which was also nominated for Game of the Year, per Deadline. Astro Bot‘s other nominations included Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music and Best Audio Design.

Astro Bot was released on Sep 6, and was soon met with critical acclaim, as mentioned by Screen Rant. Players praised it’s creativity, challenge, and nostalgia and tributes to other Playstation games. Since it’s initial release, Astro Bot has had several free updates over the past few months that have greatly expanded it’s content.
