The Indian American candidate who just announced she will oppose Mike Honda in the Congressional race in San Jose is being backed by a conservative super PAC known as Indian Americans for Freedom, reports SF Gate.
Vanila Singh, an anesthesiologist from Stanford Medical Center, says she was approached by Chicago businessman Shalabh “Shalli” Kumar and his super PAC about running.
Among Kumar’s concerns is recruiting candidates with a pro-India agenda and securing a visa for Narendra Modi, a candidate for Indian Prime Minister who is banned from coming to the United States because of his role in the Gujarat riots in 2002 that left 1,000 Muslims dead.
Already opposing Honda is Ro Khanna who has a treasure chest of $2 million, three times that of the incumbent.
Much of his money is coming from Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. He has challenged Honda not to accept money from outside the district.
In return, Honda has proposed limiting contributions from individuals to $570. Khanna has not responded to the challenge, according to the Daily Kos.
