Mounting opposition from the National Rifle Association and the gun lobby is jeopardizing the confirmation of Vivek Murthy as US Surgeon General, reports USA Today.
At issue is Murthy’s letter to President Obama after the massacre of 20 children and six adults in Newtown, CN in 2012.
Murthy called for mandatory licensing of anyone purchasing a firearm or ammunition and a federal ban on assault rifles.
Democratic Sen. Mark Begich, a strong gun rights advocate, has written a letter to the White House indicating he is likely to vote no on the nomination.
Others predict many Senate Democrats in tough re-election battles, may be hesitant to go up against the gun lobby.
