Vanita Gupta has been named to head the US Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, reports the Business Standard.
President Obama is expected to nominate her for the permanent position of Assistant Attorney General this fall or winter.
“Even as she has done trailblazing work as a civil rights lawyer, Vanita is also known as a unifier and consensus builder. She has a knack for bridging differences and building coalitions to drive progress,” said Attorney General Eric Holder.
Gupta has worked at the American Civil Liberties Union in its Center for Justice and Racial Justice Program. She has also worked at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
