Students this week at the University of Wisconsin in Madison launched efforts to establish a school of ethnic studies, reports the Daily Cardinal.
Right now only the Department of African American Studies has tenured track faculty.
Asian American Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies and American Indian Studies do not have department status and are only considered programs. Each of the three must pull in faculty from other departments to teach classes.
The immediate goal is to gain department status for those three programs and hire full time tenure track professors.
