NY Times: Floyd Mayweather Plays Role of Darth Vader

Floyd MayweatherYou won’t find too many undefeated champs that manage to get booed, but Floyd Mayweather (48 – 0) has that distinction.

The New York Times describes the atmosphere at the MGM in Las Vegas as more like what you would expect at Manny Pacquiao’s home country of the Philippines and not in Las Vegas, under the bright lights of the USA.

One might suspect the boos that rained down on Mayweather as he jumped atop the ropes at the end of the fight in victory might have come from Filipinos. but according to the New York Times “those booing appeared to be not Filipino fans of the beaten Manny Pacquiao but Americans, white and black.”

Pacaquiao is the people’s boxer.

Mayweather has several times pleaded guilty to domestic abuse.

Back in the Philippines in Pacquiao’s hometown of General Santos, one fan wiped away tears after the fight, reported Time Magazine.

“It’s not fair,” said 36-year-old Judith Lozano, one of 5,000 who gathered for a free screening organized by the local government. “You could see Manny was hitting him more.”
