A play with a title so controversial some theaters have canceled their schedule productions has engaged, not enraged, local Muslim communities, reports PRI.
Dirty Paki Lingerie by playwright and actress Aizzah Fatima raises issues about sexuality, religion and identity of six Pakistani Americans.
The term Paki is considered a slur in the Pakistani American community and because of that, some theaters have run away from the production.
“There was a human side to this experience of being a Muslim American woman that was completely missing in the media, completely missing in the types of characters we see in film, TV, theater,” said Fatima about her play. “I wanted to portray Muslim women, especially women who cover their hair, the way I know them to be, as activists and feminists and very outspoken go-getters.”
You can hear her thoughts about the controversy over the play’s title and her hopes of what the audience will get out of the production in the interview below on PRI.
