A group of Asian American and Pacific Islander artists are converging on Ferguson, MO to build on similarities between the AAPI and African American communities, reports News One.
The campaign between Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), with Hands Up United is a reaction to the police shooting death of Michael Brown.
“What happened in Ferguson is not an isolated incident but is part of a wider system of discrimination and racism,” wrote Gregory Cendana, head of APALA, in the Huffington Post. “Ferguson is everywhere.”
The artists are putting on a series of workshops and performances through today to bring cultural awareness and support racial and economic justice in Ferguson.
Among the artists are comedian Jenny Yang from Disoriented Comedy; D’Lo, a queer/transgender Tamil-Sri Lankan-American actor/writer/comedian; Taz Ahmed, an activist and storyteller from Los Angeles, and Cendana who is a dancer and head of APALA.
“We believe that utilizing art and culture will foster a unique space for learning about the shared challenges within Black and AAPI communities while recognizing and celebrating our differences,” said Cendana.
