Tony-nominated screen and stage actor Ken Watanabe is battling stomach cancer.

Entertainment Weekly reports the man who portrayed the King in the Broadway revival of the King & I  recently underwent surgery after an early diagnosis.

Watanabe had been scheduled to revive his 2015 role March 1 – April 17. He says his return is delayed, and not cancelled.

He is currently hospitalized in Japan.

His appearance on stage last year was his Broadway debut.

He is best known for such films as The Last Samurai for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2004. He also appeared more recently in the 2014 remake of Godzilla as Dr. Serizawa.
