Many past employees of the nation’s largest Chinese language newspaper will get on average $19,000 each in a settlement of a lawsuit over overtime, meals and rest breaks, reports the China Post.
The lawsuit which was filed in 2004 on behalf of reporters,sales and production staff of the Chinese Daily was settled by the paper for $7.8 million dollars.
The lawsuit alleged that staff was forced to work as long as 13 to 17 hour days without overtime pay.
The Chinese Daily which has a circulation of about 120,000 people out of Monterey Park, California did not admit to wrongdoing in the settlement.
Checks could start going out as early as next week.
