The Karate Kid made famous by the late actor Pat Morita is coming back, this time to digital.
The popular movie series debuted in 1984 and spawned three movie sequels and one remake.
The Hollywood Reporter says the subscription service You Tube Red will bring the series back for ten episodes next year.
The sequel will feature original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka and will be entitled Cobra Kai. The two will reignite their rivalry after Johnny (Zabka) reopens his Cobra Kai dojo 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.
One big change is that Cobra Kai will be a comedy.
Business Insider reports this is a major coup for You Tube Red which is trying to establish itself over more established rivals Hulu, Netflix and even Amazon. You Tube won a bidding war that included all three rivals as well as AMC.
Cobra Kai will be executive produced and written by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg.
“Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid,” Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a joint statement. “Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality.”
