An upcoming gala hosted by ACT for America, a group reportedly linked to White supremacists and labeled as an “anti-Muslim hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, will honor the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Thomas Homan.
The Intercept first reported that Homan is listed as “the special dinner gala honoree” at their convention scheduled for next week in Washington D.C. Homan served as the acting director of I.C.E. under President Donald Trump until June of this year. He was vocal in his support for hard-line policies against undocumented immigrants, and pushed for controversial policies like separating migrant families at the border.
ACT for America describes itself as “the nation’s largest national security grassroots organization” on their website, and boasts a membership of over 1 million. Their “Terrorism” platform consists of three sections: Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic State and Benghazi Select Committee. Their “Immigration” platform reads: “End Sanctuary Cities”, “End Chain Migration”, “End Visa Lottery” and “Border Security.”
According to the Intercept, Act for America’s conferences have been attended by several high-ranking Republicans, such as past presidential nominee and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who was awarded the group’s “National Security Eagle Award” in 2017, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Pompeo also spoke at ACT events in 2013 and 2015, in addition to helping organize a 2016 legislative briefing for only GOP lawmakers.
