The 100th episode of Fresh Off the Boat airing Friday night reminds me of a show in transition.
With Eddie (Hudson Yang) growing up, the show appears at a turning point. Now in its fifth season, the groundbreaking program waits to hear whether it’ll return for season 6. The season finale is set to air April 12.
In this weeks milestone episode, Eddie leaves for a cultural exchange program in Taiwan. While Eddie finds various ways to get himself in and out of trouble, the family learns how to deal with life without their big brother and oldest child.
It reminds me of a family experiencing sending their oldest off to college. Before Eddie leaves, Jessica (Constance Wu) and Louis (Randall Park) hands their son a prepaid cellphone.
“Do you know the number for 911 in Taiwan,” Jessica asks a perplexed looking Eddie. “It’s 119. by the time you figure that out, your stolen kidney has already been sewn inside a rich man’s son.”
Particularly funny in this episode is a brief tribute the Huang’s pay to the Sound of Music.
Much of the cast has grown in the five years since FOTB debuted. Constance Wu comes hot off the heals of Crazy Rich Asians and has been filming Hustlers with Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B.
Randall Park has found many roles in both screen and television, co-starring in Veep and numerous movies including Aquaman and Ant-Man and the Wasp.
The youngest, Evan (Ian Chen), is set to make his big screen debut in Shazam which opens Friday.

Simu Liu from the Canadian TV series, Kim’s Convenience, guest stars in tomorrow’s episode of Fresh Off the Boat.
