Franklin and Marshall in Pennsylvania launched an investigation this week after the discovery of an anti-Asian racial slur outside a dorm room, reports Lancaster Online.
It’s the latest in a series of similar incidents targeting Asian students at the private liberal arts college in Lancaster west of Philadelphia.
“We’re all angry,” Ann Liu, a student from China, told Lancaster Online. “We all know some (Asian students) are not that welcome.”
The vandalism happened shortly after authorities found a student campaign poster defaced and a poster with demeaning words about Asian culture on a protest tree last year. Ten years ago, the Japanese American Citizens League called on the university to investigate a racial assault on two Asians and one Asian American. All three were confronted by a group of men, including some F&M students, with racial insults.
“Words and images that are meant to demean, harass or intimidate others have no place in our community or in our world,” said college president Barbara Altmann about the latest incident. She urged the culprits and any witnesses to come forward.
About 5 percent of the 2,300 students on campus are Asian.
