Lilly Singh gathers Disney stars for “The Wizard Twins of Hotel High”

Lilly Singh brought back stars from popular Disney Channel shows in her sketch, “The Wizard Twins of Hotel High.”

Singh’s Disney spoof first aired on her late-night show, “A Little Late with Lilly Singh,” just after the release of Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, according to Vulture. “The Wizard Twins of Hotel High” is a mash-up of early-2000s shows “The Wizards of Waverly Place” and “The Suite Life of Zach and Cody,” which allowed now-celebrities like Selena Gomez and the Sprouse brothers to kickstart their careers.

Brenda Song, who played London Tipton in “The Suite Life of Zach and Cody,” and Karan Brar from “Jessie” guest-starred in the skit, according to PopSugar. These familiar faces, alongside the Disney Channel format of what PopSugar notes as “supernatural hijinks, forced exposition” and “canned laughter,” seems to target younger millennials, an audience that grew up with these shows and are now in their early 20s.

Singh’s skit received positive publicity from pop culture outlets like Buzzfeed, Vulture and PopSugar, a welcome sight to the otherwise harsh criticism and low ratings her late-night show has received. “A Little Late” has a 2.1/10 rating on IMDb, averaged over 3000 votes.

As the first bisexual woman of color to host a late-night show, the former YouTuber is still adjusting to late-night network TV, a platform with an audience that is drastically different from her 14.8 million YouTube following. However, The Atlantic suggests that Singh may just need a bit of time to find her footing, since the show’s celebrity interviews are its forte. Sketches like the “The Wizard Twins of Hotel High” might also draw new appeal to Singh’s “A Little Late” show.
