For the first time ever, a baby born with HIV has been cured of the disease, according to an announcement made at the 2013 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta.
The Asian Journal reports that a Filipino American doctor was part of the team credited with the medical breakthrough.
“This is the very first case in which we’ve conclusively been able to document that the baby was infected and then after a period of treatment has been able to go off treatment without viral rebound,” Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga told CNN.
You can read more about Dr. Luzuriaga and how this breakthrough could eliminate HIV infection in children in the Asian Journal.
