Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden says he will work to dismantle Islamophobia in America.
The former Vice President gave a hopeful message at the virtual “Million Muslim Voters Summit” hosted by Emgage Action, the country’s largest Muslim American Political Action Committee (PAC), reports Fox News.
Biden targeted his front-running opponent Donald Trump by claiming America has seen “an unconscionable rise in Islamophobia” since Trump’s presidency.
“I’m here today to ask you to join me in a fight to rip this poison from our government root and stem,” said Biden during the event, “starting by making Donald Trump a one-term president this November,” according to a video posted by Pak News.
Biden vowed to eliminate the Muslim travel ban, which was implemented by the Trump administration, that prohibits entry to America from the Muslim nations like Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, and more.
He also applauded Islamic faith for being “one of the great confessional faiths.” Biden said he wishes “[America] taught more in our schools about the Islamic faith.”
He claims Muslim communities were the first to feel marginalized by Trump’s “assault on Black and Brown people.” He said this opened the doors for more insults and attacks on other minority groups, fanning the flames of hate in America.
However, Trump campaign spokeswoman Courtney Parella told CNBC, “President Trump understands that our faith is what unites us as a nation. He has and will continue to staunchly defend religious freedoms for all Americans.”
Biden said Muslim voices are not recognized enough, and their votes and voices matter.
Emgage Action is now on Biden’s list of endorsers after supporting Bernie Sanders in the primary season.
Emgage Action said in a statement their number one goal is to remove President Trump from office and “to replace him with someone who can begin to heal our nation,” reports International Business Times.
Several Muslim American politicians from the Democratic Party also signed on to the Biden campaign, reported the International Business Times. This includes Congresswoman and former refugee Ilhan Omar, Attorney General of Minnesota Keith Ellison, and Indiana Rep. Andre Carson.
