Naomi Osaka isn’t letting fans stop her from being, well, her.
She posted some photos on Instagram wearing a bikini which set off a negative reaction from some who feel the 22 year old shouldn’t abandon her innocence.
“I just wanna say it’s creeping me out how many people are commenting @ me to maintain my “innocent image” and “don’t try to be someone your not”, she tweeted. “You don’t know me, I’m 22, I wear swimsuits to the pool. Why do you feel like you can comment on what I can wear?”
Osaka gained world wide fame when she beat Serena Williams in the US Open in 2018. The fans, upset over some calls from the umpire, booed. Williams, after openly displaying her anger at the calls, scolded the fans and urged them to celebrate Osaka’s victory.
“It feels weird when people say that I am a role model because I feel like I’m still figuring out life myself but if someone’s outlook changes for the better because of something I’ve said or done, I can’t help but feel proud,” Osaka recently said to People.
She told the magazine she’s looking forward to competing again.
“I know that testing will be rigorous at tournaments in the near future and the structure and fan element will be different, but it’s worth it in order to play again and even more important to keep the world safe,” she said.
