Ann Curry (photo by Lia Chang/AsianConnections.com) recalled this weekend how she once felt all alone as a young Asian American journalist working in a small Southern Oregon town in Medford, reports Richard Prince in Journalisms.
Curry was responding to questions from MSNBC reporter Richard Lui at the gala banquet this Saturday in New York at the Asian American Journalists Association annual convention.
“I felt like I was the only Asian.” the NBC reporter told a packed banquet hall at the Hilton in Midtown New York.
“I really want to thank you because what made me feel less alone was knowing you were coming.
“I could hear you. It made me want to create a space, a bigger space for you. . . . Just remember that you’re not alone. You are creating a space and you can always feel that they’re coming. And it’s a great joy to know that.”
Curry walked off the stage to a standing ovation.
