A petition drive is underway calling on local and federal prosecutors to launch a hate crime investigation into the tragic triple murder of two Asian Americans and a Latino in Milwaukee.
Dan Popp is accused of kicking down the apartment door of Mai and Phia Vue and killing them in front of their children at point blank range. Just moments earlier, a witness says Popp approached Jesus Manso-Perez and his son and asked them if they were Puerto Rican. According to the son, Popp said “you guys got to go” before quickly pulling the trigger.
Popp faces three charges of first-degree intentional homicide and one charge of attempted intentional homicide. Popp is currently undergoing a mental competency evaluation.
A coalition of 22 organizations from the Hmong, Latino, and other communities are united in their call for a hate crime investigation.
“It is important that our community, our city, our state and, in fact, our nation admit that hate does exist and where we see it, we must identify it” said Darryl Morin of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
