US Senator Daniel Inouye passed away at 5:01 Eastern Time, his office announced. His wife Irene and son Ken were at his side, according to the statement.
The senator enlisted in the US Army shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Her served in the famed 442nd Combat team. He lost is arm in battle on a hill in San Terenzo, Italy on April 21, 1945. In 1959 he became Hawaii’s first congressman. He served 9 consecutive terms in the US Senate starting in 1963. “I represented the people of Hawaii and this nation honestly and to the best of my ability. I think I did OK.”
His last words were, “Aloha.”
