The Republic: Court Uphold California Ban on Shark Fins

sharkA challenge by Chinese American groups to a California ban on shark fins has been rejected by a federal court, reports The Republic

The ban officially took effect January 1. Three other states and Guam also have similar bans. Supporters say 73 million sharks are killed for their fins each year. Some Chinese American groups says the ban is discriminatory because it only covers shark fins which is often served at traditional Chinese banquets, while other parts of the fish are not covered.

  1. I liked shark fin soup but I have to agree with the courts here. They most certainly can and should ban it. It is a sign of the times. I hate to see tigers go extinct for "medicine" and superstitions, too. I don't eat dog or monkey brains either, and I still eat plenty of Chinese food.
