A new report from the Asian Pacific American Legal Center finds Asian Americans are more diverse socioeconomically than most realize, reports KPCC.
Some Asian American groups in Southern California earn more than non-Latino whites, but groups such as Cambodians, Bangladeshis and Tongans on average earn less than blacks and Latino.
“There is this myth that is prevalent that Asian American communities and Pacific Islander communities are uniformly successful,” said Dan Ichinose, the legal center’s demographic research director. “But when we look at the data, that is just not the case.”
Inchinose warned of the danger of lumping all Asian Americans together. As many as 1.3 million Asian Americans are undocumented.
“I think that in the Asian American community, it has traditionally been a source of shame to be different from the overall stereotype of what it means to be successful in America,” Catherine Eusebio said, an immigration activist. “I think now is the time to come out…If we stay silent, then members of our community are continuously being deported every day.”
