A judge today sentenced former New York State Assemblyman Jimmy Meng to jail on a bribery charge, reports the Gothamist.
Meng who was the first Asian American elected to the New York Legislature in 2004 was fined $30,000 and sentenced to one month in jail.
“As a child I grew up in poverty, I have always tried to the best of my ability to help others less fortunate than me,” Meng, 69, reportedly told the judge at his sentencing today. “I cannot explain what had come over me and why I did this. It is simply a stupid mistake that I will have to live with for the rest of my life.”
Prosecutors had their own idea of what motivated Meng. Find out what prosecutors told the judge and the plea made by Meng’s daughter, Rep. Grace Meng (pictured here) in the Gothamist.
