Census information released by the US Census Bureau in time for Asian Pacific American Month this May paints a diverse picture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
There are 18.2 million Asian Americans in the United States in 2011. That represents a 46 percent growth rate from 2000 to 2010. Pacific Islanders experienced a 40 percent growth rate and now have a total population of 1.4 million.
12.8 percent of Asians live in poverty and 15 percent lack health insurance. Compare that to 21.5 percent of Pacific Islanders living in poverty and 18.5 percent lacing health insurance.
