The city of Glendale in California has voted to erect a “peace monument” for comfort women in Glendale Central Park, reports Hankyoreh.
It will be identical to one in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul.
Glendale’s former mayor was in Korea this week to gather information for the project.
Frank Quintero was visibly moved when he heard the comfort women’s story.
“It is more distressing and upsetting to see it for myself,” said Quintero during a visit to a museum exhibit on comfort women. “They [comfort women] were only young girls…I respect their bravery in enduring such difficult lives.”
