International superstar and “King of Collaborators,” Pitbull, is at it again. This time he’s collaborating with Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra in their new single, “Exotic.”
Priyanka Chopra, former Miss World and Bollywood actress, is India’s first star to attempt a crossover to the western world. Chopra, who is signed with Interscope records, released her first single, “In My City,” back in September of 2012. Unfortunately the single wasn’t a commercial or critical success.
“Exotic” is Chopra’s second attempt at hitting the radio airwaves, and who better to do it with than Mr. Worldwide himself? Pitbull is known to collaborate with the industry’s most popular artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, and Ne-Yo, all producing number one hits on the radio and Billboard charts.
The best part of the song features Chopra singing in both English and Hindi, adding some Bollywood flare to the chorus. However, the lyrics are less than inspiring, as Pitbull raps, “From Bollywood to Hollywood, it’s all about the money,” while Chopra sings “I’m feeling so exotic” and “Come with me” repeatedly.
Chopra released the single’s official music video today. As an Indian American, I had high expectations for this international crossover, hoping it would help shine light on Indian talent. However, I was none too pleased with the cliché, overdone music video. The video, filmed in Miami, begins with a shot of Chopra coming out of the water in a bikini singing, “Cool me down, I’m feeling so exotic,” and “I’m hotter than the tropics.” Overall, the video is full of gorgeous shots of the beauty queen, but it lacks substance.
The Desi club banger is currently number one on India’s iTunes chart, but I don’t see it hitting the top ten in the U.S. I commend Miss World for teaming up with Mr. Worldwide, however, it seems Chopra may have a ways to go before she sees commercial success in the west.
