An effort designed to attract Asian American business to the San Francisco Bay Area city of San Leandro is facing a backlash, reports ABC7/KGO.
The city east of San Francisco will raise the Chinese flag over city hall for one day, October 1, the day the People’s Republic of China was formed.
That decision has angered members of the Tibetan community who have long accused China of oppression.
“It represents blood, blood of the Tibetans, Uighurs and the Chinese people who’ve been killed and massacred by the Chinese government,” said Kunjo Tashi, president of the Tibetan Association of Northern California.
The city’s own school board is also angered by the decision, and has voted to move its October 1st scheduled meeting outside the city in protest.
You can read more behind the reason the Chinese flag will be raised October 1st and what other Bay Area cities have done on ABC7/KGO.
RE: Raising Chinese Flag in SF Bay Area Sparks Anger: Am surprised Falun Gong is not also protesting. They seem to be everywhere in SF Chinatown.
RE: Raising Chinese Flag in SF Bay Area Sparks Anger: That's a good point, Corky. Falun Gong has a regular presence in Chinatown.
RE: Raising of Chinese Flag sparks protest in SF Bay Area: Then why not also protest American flag for the spilled blood of Native Americans? Why not protest the Israeli flag for the ONGOING genocide against the Palestinians? Why not protest the Tibetan flag for Dalai Lama’s enslavement of 95% of the Tibetan population? Why not protest the British flag? Why not protest the Japan flag? etc etc
RE: Raising of Chinese flag in SF Bay Area sparks protest: The Chinese flag is a symbol of hate. It is understandable that the Tibetans would be unnerved by it, and rightfully so. The Tibetans have every right to protest the Chinese flag, just as Jews have a right to protest the Swastika.
