In the words of the executive producer of the hit AMC series, The Walking Dead, “Steven is the heart of the show.”
That’s Steven, as in Steve Yeun, who stars as Glenn Rhee, the romantic hero of the cult show.
“Everybody loves that character,” he tells the Los Angeles Times. “Everybody’s rooting for that character. He may be tortured and sensitive, but he’s always a hero.”
Yeun is another successful immigrant story living a dream set up by his parents.
His father gave up a lucrative career as an architect in South Korea to open up new opportunities for his families in America. He poured everything into his kids and made sure Yeun graduated from Kalamazoo College in Michigan debt free.
When Yeun decided he wanted to convert his psychology degree into a career in acting, he asked for his parent’s permission.
“I felt like I’ve needed to ask my parents up until about four years ago about everything,” Yeun said. “They have helped me tremendously, I came out of college with no debt. Everything they made, they just poured into my education. The least I could do was ask their permission.”
He landed a spot at Chicago’s legendary comedy club, Second City, before moving to Los Angeles to give acting a go.
Five months later, he accepted the offer to work on The Walking Dead.
