The Viet LGBT History Campaign will focus on the contributions of gays in both Vietnam and the Vietnamese American community, reports Gay Star News.
“I started this website to respond to a specific event that excluded Viet LGBTs in California, as well as a bigger picture of homophobia and orientalism around Viet LGBTs,” said Dr Natalie Newton, a Vietnamese-American anthropologist.
The Tet Parade in Westminster last February specifically excluded members of the gay community who had participated in the three previous years. The change in policy happened after the city gave up control of the parade to a private group.
Newton hopes her website will dispel the myth there are no gay people in the Vietnamese community.
