Richmond Confidential: Pain still felt by Southeast Asian family ten years after daughter’s murder

candlelightA father is still grieving for the daughter he lost ten years ago to a murderer.

Friends, family and public officials offered their support at a candlelight vigil held in 15-year old Chan Bounkeut honor on October 13, the anniversary of her killing, reports Richmond Condifential.

Her death inspired the formation of SEAYL, Richmond’s Southeast Asian Young Leaders, which is dedicated to reducing youth violence in the community.

“All my hopes and dreams collapsed the day my daughter died,” said Gwai, the father. “People celebrate Christmas. I can’t do it in my family. I can’t even celebrate my own birthday,” he said.

The vigil organized by SEAYL also remembered other youth who have recently died in Richmond. You can read about that in Richmond Condifential.
