It’s an encounter many Japanese Americans have faced.
Someone casually throws out the slur Jap as if it were just another word in the English dictionary.
That’s what happen to David Toyoshima who wrote about his encounter in a blog for Discover Nikkei.
The slur wasn’t directed at David.
It was posted by a friend of a friend on someone else’s timeline.
Should David risk alienating his friend by speaking out against the use of the slur?
Should he just ignore it because the person who used the term probably didn’t intend to offend?
It’s a question many Asian Americans have faced.
