The Boston Herald reports that a block of Boston Chinatown (photo by Osseous) which had been lost for the construction of the Southeast Expressway in the 1950s is about to come back to life.
The Asian Community Development Corp and New Boston have broken ground on a residential development on that same block which will bring 50 affordable condos and 95 affordable apartments to a 362-unit complex.
Paul Lee, chairman of ACDC remembers when that block was full of activity.
“My dad worked in a local restaurant and my mom in a local garment factory,” Lee said. “It was a real neighborhood where people looked out for one another.”
Some of the new affordable units will go for about $531 a month for a one bedroom. Most will be rented for about $866.
