American Olympic ice skater Mirai Nagasu who placed 4th at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics was not selected for the Sochi Games despite a third place finish at the US Nationals on Saturday.
Yahoo reports the third spot on the US team instead went to fourth place finisher Ashley Wagner, a two time National champion who was in tears Saturday night after a disappointing competition.
“I am at a loss for words right now,”Wagner said Saturday night. “It has been a really long four years. It wasn’t my night last night. I am happy my federation was able to see beyond one bad skate.”
Nagasu was a darling of the Vancouver games who completed her routine despite suffering a bloody nose in the middle of it.
She was born in Montebello, California and currently lives in Arcadia and is a member of the Pasadena Figure Skating Club.
“We have selection guidelines that have been put in place,” said U.S. figure skating chief Pat St. Peter. “If you look at Ashley Wagner’s record and performance she has the top credentials. It is an objective analysis.”
