The US Figure Skating Association has snubbed Mirai Nagasu a second time, reports Asiance.
Despite her third place finish at Nationals, the USFSA has not selected her to compete in the 2014 World Championships.
Instead, just as she is in the Olympics, Nagasu will be an alternate for the World Championships.
This is particularly puzzling since other alternates to the Olympics have been selected to compete in the World Championships.
Eugene Hung, who was active in the #MiraiEarnedIt campaign to get Nagasu into the Olympics, thinks the whole controversy will still matter after the Olympics.
You can read his reasons why, along with a list of seven questions he thinks the USFSA needs to answer, in Asiance.
RE: Mirai Nagasu snubbed second time: This isn’t a new controversy, since the World team was announced at the same time as the Olympic one.
While it’s true the alternates in the men’s and pairs event were selected for the World team, it’s widely believed Jeremy Abbott is retiring after the Olympics (which would mean the alternate would be named anyway). The 3rd place pair team finished literally a fraction of point behind the 2nd place pair at Nationals and deserved a consolation prize.
While the selection committee did seem to make Mirai an exception, she did compete after Nationals at a major event, and finished 10th — the worst placement of her career.
The claims of there being no skaters of Asian heritage are a bit ridiculous too, as the reigning Olympic and World champion and arguable to biggest name in the spot — Kim Yuna — is Korean. And Mao Asada of Japan is very popular, too.
RE: Mirai Nagasu snubbed second time: Thanks for clarifying the timeline. Since all the attention was on the Olympics, very few members of the general public were aware of the World Team announcement. That's why it was highlighted here.
Re: Mirai Nagasu snubbed 2nd time by US Figure Skating Assoc: NothingNew has to be some goober racist to be comparing Mirai (a US citizen) to foreign nationals. I guess he’s the same douchebag behind the Michelle Kwan headlines “American beats Kwan” insinuating she’s not American.
