Chinese Americans whose families still bear the wounds of the historical political divide between China, Taiwan and Hong Kong joined together to celebrate Chinese New Year this weekend, reports the Sacramento Bee.
In 1949, Mao Zedong’s communists drove out the forces of Chiang Kai Shek to Taiwan and the two sides have never been able to reconcile.
It was a fact alluded to in opening remarks at this weekend’s celebration.
Daniel Chiang, president of the Chinese New Year Culture Association, called for unity.
“I hope both sides of the Taiwan Strait will be peaceful,” he said to applause.
This past week Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council and China’s Taiwan Affairs Office met for the first time to discuss their differences.
