Mindy Kaling gave her most extensive interview to date about the criticism she’s received about the diversity or lack of it on her program.
Kaling told the Los Angeles Times “The fact is, I am so proud to be an Asian American and part of the Asian America community,” she added. “My connection with that community is so strong. It struck me that the show is being characterized as not celebrating that richness. I take that more personally than other things.”
Kaling, while heralded for her role as a strong independent women on The Mindy Project, has been criticized by the predominantly white cast that surrounds her. She’s also been criticized for her choice of men on her show. Recently, MANAA, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans, called on Fox to end what MANAA called the “white only dating policy” for Mindy’s character.
“Ultimately, this is a compliment to the bar that people have set for me,” she said. “And that expectation is not one that my peers face. And I have to accept that.”
