Paul Lo has been sworn in as Superior Court judge in the California Central Valley county of Merced–becoming the first Hmong American judge in the nation, reports KGPE.
If being the first comes with extra pressure, Lo says he feels well prepared.
“There was already pressure at an early age,” Lo said. “A lot of pressure from the community to get the education and do well and to come back to the community and help the community. So I don’t think this would be very different.”
Lo came to the United States at the age of 11 not speaking a word of English.
