Former television executive Paula Madison always knew she had a Chinese grandfather, but never met him.
Now that she’s retired after decades working for NBC, the woman who grew up in Harlem set out to retrace her Chinese roots, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Madison chronicles her journey in a new documentary in Finding Samuel Lowe: From Harlem to China, directed by Jeanette Kong of Toronto.
Her grandfather immigrated to Jamaica to work on the sugar plantations. He eventually met Madison’s grandmother. The two never married, but lived together and had a three-year old daughter together.
You can read about how Madison found her grandfather’s family in China in the Wall Street Journal.
