The State Senator many felt could become a strong challenger to Mayor Ed Lee says he won’t run against him, reports SF Gate.
Mark Leno says instead he’ll concentrate on his last two years in the state senate.
Polls had indicated Leno could possibly unseat Lee who the progressive wing in San Francisco feels is not liberal enough.
“After significant consideration and examination, I have determined that now is not the time for me to enter the race,” Leno said.
Lee’s huge war chest may have been a deterrent. The mayor is expected to spend $3-4 million on his re-election push.
Some of Leno’s campaign strategist also may have been discouraging him. You can find out why in SF Gate.
