They say the best defense sometimes is a good offense.
With that in mind, more than 32,000 have signed a petition on Care2Petititions demanding that Disney not whitewash the upcoming live action version of Mulan now in development.
Natalie Molnar, a children’s librarian from Michigan, launched the petition, according to the International Business Times.
Casting decisions are a long way off and there is no indication Disney is even considering whitewashing the movie.
Given Hollywood’s long history with whitewashing, Molnar didn’t want to take a chance.
“Whitewashing beloved characters of color tells children that if they’re not white themselves, then they can’t be the hero,” said Molnar.
Recently Dreamworks decided to cast Scarlett Johansson as the lead in Ghost in the Shell, a film based on the popular Japanese manga series.
The Prince of Persia and Last Airbender are two other examples.
Who should be cast in Mulan. KDrama Stars has come up with a list of 10 actors who should be considered.
Who are your favorites? Who would you add to the list?
RE: 30,000 call on Disney not to Whitewash Mulan: so its not ok for a white woman to play an asian woman but its ok to remake all these old movies and tv shows that had white actors with black people playing white roles what does natalie molnar say about that she wouldn’t dare say anything about a blak person natatalie sounds like a trouble making coward racist who hates white people
RE: Tony Gabriello’s response to 30,000 call on Disney not to whitewash Mulan: The point of wanting Asians to act the parts in the Disney movie Mulan is that Mulan is a story set in China about a Chinese heroine. It is not a racially neutral role like the ones that you may be referring to where black people are filling roles in remakes, although I don’t see that happening in great numbers and even if it did, it would never redress the discrimination that blacks have faced in the t.v. and movie industry.I think that it’s interesting that when anyone challenges that status quo where whites dominate, they are labelled racists who hate white people. No, they are people who want authenticity where it’s appropriate and a wider opportunity for people of color when any quality actor/actress can play the role such as “the doctor”, “the detective”, “the mother” and so on.
RE: 30,000 call on Disney not to whitewash Mulan: But what about all the whiiite peoopppllee and their lost opportunities????
