Students at Northwestern University have launched an online petition to support a faculty proposal for an Asian American Studies major, reports The Daily Northwestern..
Students went on hunger strike in 1995 for the major. Four years later, the university implemented a minor which still exists today. The proposal for a major is being prepared by the faculty of Asian American Studies program.
“If students show they support or need a new aspect of curriculum, administrators should react to that,” said Kevin Luong, a senior who is currently minoring in Asian American Studies.
The faculty hopes to submit their proposal by November with a formal vote by the faculty senate in the spring.
