President Obama shared a bit about himself in a post State of the Union interview on You Tube this past week.
He offered a bit of insight into what keeps him going amid all the political noise and bitterness that cuts across our politics.
You Tube personality Ingrid Nilsen asked the President to show her things from the president’s home that are meaningful to him.
The President instead pulled items out of his pocket which he says he frequently carries with him. They were items given to him by people he’s met in his years as president.
The first item he show was from Pope Francis. The President says the Rosary beads signify peace and promoting understanding and ethical behavior.
He followed that with a little statue of Buddha given to him by a Buddhist monk, a coptic cross from Ethiopia and a Hindu little statuette of monkey god Hanuman that a woman gave him.
“The reason I thought it would be useful to show these is because I carry these around all the time,” said Mr. Obama. “I’m not superstitious so it’s not like I think I necessarily think I have to have them on me at all times, but it does remind me of all the different people I’ve met along the way and how much they invested in me. Their stories and what their hopes and dreams are. If I feel tired or feel discouraged sometimes, I can kind of reach into my pocket and say, yeah, that’s something I can overcome because somebody gave me the privilege of working on these issues that will affect them. I better get back to work.”
