Is Hillary Clinton taking the Asian American Pacific Islander vote for granted?
That’s the message the Republicans put forward after excerpts of an internal memo leaked out from the Clinton campaign.
“What’s alarming is the Clinton campaign failed to mention the importance of Asian Americans, despite mentioning other minority groups and launching ‘AAPI for Hillary’ a month ago,” said Ninio Fatalvo in a statement from the Republican National Committee’s Asian Pacific American Engagement group.
The statement followed an article in the Business Insider that excerpted parts of the Clinton campaign memo.
The memo from Clinton’s campaign manager Robby Mook stated:
It will be very difficult, if not impossible, for a Democrat to win the nomination without strong levels of support among African American and Hispanic voters. We believe that’s how it should be. And a Democrat who is unable to inspire strong levels of support in minority communities will have no credible path to winning the presidency in the general election.
The article went on to quote from other parts of the three page memo which also did not mention the AAPI community.
” While the Clinton campaign will continue to take Asian American voters for granted, the RNC has been building a general election data-driven ground game program to engage Asian Americans in battleground states since 2013,” said the GOP’s Fatalvo.
The statement from the GOP did not include the entire leaked memo. The Business Insider article also did not include the entire memo so it can not be reported with certainty that the AAPI vote was excluded from the memo.
AAPI for Hillary did not respond to AsAmNews’s request for comment.
